There are such a wealth of small local businesses in Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas, and I thought it would be nice to get to know some of them, and share this with you!  So, I have decided to write a 'business blog series', featuring a range of different enterprises that might be of interest to you, my audience.  Obviously there are too many to be able to feature them all, but I have chosen carefully, and hope to be able to include a personal review of each business where possible.  I will spotlight just one business at a time, and I will spread these out over the forthcoming months for you to enjoy!

What’s your name?  Sam Coomber

What do you do?

I’m a qualified instructor of first aid and health and safety.  For businesses (including educational establishments), I teach the full range of first aid qualifications, as well as health and safety.  For businesses that might not have enough time or confidence to carry out their own risk assessments, I can provide this service.  I also advise new businesses of their first aid and health and safety responsibilities.

As well as this, I teach awareness courses for children in schools, clubs, or privately (including teenagers who intend on becoming babysitters); for families who prefer adults and children to learn together; and for parents-to-be, new parents and grandparents.  I am also able to tailor courses to your specific requirements, e.g. Anaphylaxis, choking, etc.  I run courses at organised venues, in the comfort of your home, or mine.

Why did you start your venture?

I am really passionate about first aid and I truly believe that as many people as possible should know how to treat somebody if they’re poorly or injured.  People shouldn’t be scared of it, and should have the confidence to practice their skills, and that’s what I try to instil in my courses.

What do you want people to know about you?

I am fun, lively and bubbly, and this comes across in my training.  I want people to relax and have fun whilst learning, as it makes the courses enjoyable and easier to remember.  I take the common-sense approach to health and safety, and try to remove the barriers that people perceive health and safety to be.  I aim to steer well away from the traditional ‘stigma’ of these topics being boring!  I’m also married to my hubby Jason and we have a daughter, Zoe.  So I appreciate how hard it is to have a family, run a home and work full time.  It’s a real juggling act at times!

What are your aims?

To learn something new every day, to have fun, and to educate and empower as many people as possible to trust their instincts.  I would love to be able to go into schools, teaching not only staff but children too, to learn the basics of first aid and provide them with these skills for life.

If you could only give one piece of advice to my audience, who would it be to, and what would it be?

I would give this advice to families – make time for yourself and each other, enjoy every sunset and sunrise (unless you get to enjoy a sleep in), don’t take each other for granted, love life and don’t be afraid to laugh out loud! Oh – and learn first aid!!

My Personal Review

I have recently attended one of Sam's baby and toddler first aid sessions, along with my parents who regularly look after my toddler.  From the start, Sam was keen to make sure the session was tailored to what we wanted to know, taking into consideration what we already knew and also what was most relevant to us and our circumstances.  The session was fun and informative, and very hands-on.  I found it a great way to learn, and certainly feel more confident that I could cope and know what action needs to be taken in both serious first aid emergencies, as well as with the more day-to-day injuries and ailments of raising a child.  Although this was a baby and toddler first aid session, Sam also made sure we understood the differences between dealing with an adult, a child and a baby, and we were able to practice all three approaches.  One of the most useful factors was that Sam was able to come to us and we held the training session in my living room, which made the session very accessible to us and we were able to fit it in around our busy schedules.  As well as this, it was very affordable and well worth every penny.  Five out of five stars for this fantastic and very worthy local business!!
